0, 65 Research Assistant (GHI Moscow)
The German Historical Institute Moscow, a research institute of the Max Weber Foundation – German research institutes in humanities abroad is looking for a Research Assistant (female / male) (a temporary position, 65% of the regular working time) for June 1, 2022 for the German-Russian research project ‘Languages of Eighteenth-century Russian Diplomacy in the European Context’ to work on the sub-project ‘Language and Sociability in the Diplomacy of Holstein in the Eighteenth Century: Relations of the House of Gottorp with Russia and Other Countries of Northern Europe’.
The main activities of the GHI Moscow are the study of the common history of Germany and Russia in the European context, the intensification of cooperation between Russian and German scholars, the coordination and implementation of joint research and editing projects, and the promotion of young scholars.
The DFG-funded project of the GHI Moscow examines the development of linguistic practices in European diplomacy during the “long” eighteenth century and, in particular, the rise of French as the universal language of diplomacy.
The aim of the subproject ‘Language and Sociability in the Diplomacy of Holstein in the Eighteenth Century: Relations of the House of Gottorp with Russia and Other Countries of Northern Europe’ is to examine diplomatic relations between the duchy and Russia from the point of view of language use and in a broad European context, using archives in Schleswig-Holstein in particular.
The project is based at the GHI Moscow and will be carried out in cooperation with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel. The place of employment is Kiel with regular stays in Moscow to be arranged individually.

Your profile:
- Master’s degree in history with above-average grades;
- Interest in diplomatic history or in the history of Germany or Russia in the early modern period or in historical sociolinguistics;
- Good reading knowledge of German, French, and Russian; Latin desirable.
Provided that the relevant requirements are met, we offer the corresponding remuneration (TVöD Bund pay group 13). The appointment is limited to 3 years. The regular working time is 65%.
